Capital: The capital of Madagascar is : Antanarivo. Antananarivo was begun as a fortress circa 1625 by King Andrianjaka, and takes its name (the City of the Thousand) from the number of soldiers assigned to guarding it. For many years it was the principal village of the Hova chiefs and gained importance as they made themselves sovereigns of the greater part of Madagascar. The settlement eventually became a town of some 80,000 inhabitants. French later took control and in 1947 Antanarivo became the capital.

History:
Madagascar WAS part of Africa, but after a large earthquake 165 million years ago, it broke free.
After the earthquake, over the next 45 million years, the island drifted 250 miles to the northeast, floating to its current position.
The French colonized early in Madagascar's history and because of the colonization, French became the offiacal language.
Until 1895 there was a monarchy government and to this day people still protest, wanting to change the government.
There was a queen (Queen Ranavalona) who treated her citizens so poorly she is still refered to as "the wicked queen" today
The first settlers were Portugese, and that is why some people in the southern tip of the island speak Portugese.

What I Learned: I learned that the official language of Madagascar is France because the French invaded Madagascar a long time ago. I learned that Madagascar is the world's fourth largest island. I learned that Madagascar has two rulers, a prime minister and a president. I also found out that 100 malagasy ariarys are only equal to 5 cents in US currency. I also learned that Madagascar was part of Africa, but an earthquake broke it off.
I learned that rice is usually eaten with every meal. Every meal is usually eaten with an "eating mat" on the ground. Most of the madagscar cuisine is based on early French cuisine due to French's invasion in the 1800's. I found out that Magascar's people are called "Malagasy" (like we are called "Americans"). Finally, I learned tat Malagasy people like there food very spicy.
Madagascar's largest predator - the fossa - has a cat-like body and a dog-like nose, but it is neither a cat nor a dog. It is about twice the size of a house cat, the fossa primarily hunts birds and lemurs. A long tail helps it balance in trees high above the ground - CAS Madagascar PDF
